  • 21 – 25 February , Colombo, Sri Lanka: A Ministerial level meeting approved the Colombo Declaration and the Articles of Association for the initiation of South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP)

  • 10 – 15 March – An intergovernmental experts group meeting was organized by UNEP of the South Asian countries was held in Bangalore, India, to identify and discuss the common ecological problems of the region. The meeting unanimously adopted that it would be mutually beneficial to establish a sub-regional organization, devoted for protection and management of the environment
