New Director General

Mr. S.M.D.P. Anura Jayatilake takes over duties as 10th Director General of SACEP.  As per the decision of the 12th Meeting of the Governing Council of SACEP, Government of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka nominated Mr. Jayatilake to be the 10th Director General of SACEP from its inception.  Prior to this assignment, Mr. Jayatilake was working as a Director at the Ministry of Environment, Government of Sri Lanka.

Mr. Jayatilake possesses over two decades of experience in environment management, policy and its implementation at national and international levels as he worked in various divisions of the Ministry of Environment, Government of Sri Lanka. He brings a unique combination of scientific knowledge and extensive experience in international negotiations.

He obtained a BSc in Built Environment from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 1980 and M.Sc. in Architecture in 1985 from the same University. Also possesses a M.BA from the Post Graduate Institute of Management (PIM), University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Sri Lanka and is a Chartered Architect.

While working as the Director Air Resource Management and International Relations, he led the government delegation on several international fora. Also functioned as the National Focal Point for Chemical Management and related international Conventions and Treaties namely Basel Convention on Hazardous Wastes, Stockholm Convention on POPs, Rotterdam Convention (PIC ), SAICM. He was the National Focal Point for Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and also coordinated the financial mechanism for many international conventions such as UNCBD, UNCCD, and UNFCCC.

He had the privilege of being associated with the member countries of SACEP, Secretariats of Multilateral Environment Agreements, UNEP, Multilateral and Bilateral donor agencies, and other stakeholders in matters relating to environmental protection, natural resource conservation and sustainable development.  Mr. Anura Jayatilake expects that, this background would help him to cope with the challenging requirements of the new assignment in this Regional Intergovernmental Organization.

It is for the second time that Government of Sri Lanka had the honour of having the Head of this Inter-governmental Organisation established on February 1982, pursuant the Colombo Declaration adopted at the Meeting of South Asian Environment Ministers held in Colombo in February 1981.
