Elahi, outgoing DG and
Welcome Dr. Boaz ........
| Mr. Mahboob Elahi remained Director
General of SACEP from July 2001 to April 2005 and
during his tenure, SACEP achieved several milestones.
These, amongst others, include (a) Registration of SACEP
as a Multilateral Agreement with the Treaty Division
of UN (b) signing of MoUs for SAARC-SACEP and UNEP-SACEP
cooperation. As an organization, SACEP is now better
networked at the regional and global level and as a results of these activities and initiatives,
can perform its role effectively in South Asia. |

| Dr. A. A. Boaz is SACEP's new
Director-General, taking over from Mr. Mahboob Elahi,
who completed his term of office in April of this
year.
Dr. Boaz joins SACEP as the
first DG to be selected on a competitive basis. Prior
to this, the DGs were nominated by the member
countries for a three year term. The Review Committee
of SACEP had recommended this to give a new thrust to
the activities of SACEP so that it may play a pivotal
role in the Environmental Activities in the region.
Dr. Boaz joins SACEP from the Indian Forestry
Service (IFS), where he has served for 26 years. He
was a Chief Conservator of Forests of the State of
Chhattisgarh since 2001. Prior to that, he held the
post of Conservator of Forests in the Madhya Pradesh
Forest Department for eight years. He has also worked
as a consultant and resource person for several
international organizations, including the FAO,
International Development Research Organization,
Canada, the Centre for International Forestry
Research, Indonesia and Winrock International.

While in the IFS, Dr. Boaz was instrumental in
implementing a variety of initiatives in the forestry
sector, including projects on eco-development, social
forestry, sustainable livelihoods and medicinal
plants. Most of his work has been with rural and indigenous
communities to foster sustainable use
and development of natural resources.
Dr. Boaz has also been involved in the formulation
of several important policies, including the
Ecotourism Policy and the Biodiversity Conservation
Policy of the State of Madhya Pradesh, and the
Cultural and Tourism policies for the State of
Chhatisgarh.
During his tenure with the IFS, he has held several
senior posts, including: Director, Medicinal Plants
Task Force, Madhya Pradesh; Director, Tourism, Culture,
Archaeology, Archives and Museums, Chhattisgarh;
Managing Director of the Chhattisgarh Tourism Board;
General Manager, Madhya Pradesh Minor Forest Produce
Federation; Executive Director, Forest
Development Corporation. Prior to joining SACEP, he was
the chief
conservator, Project Formulation, Research and
Extension, Forest Department in
Chhattisgarh.
Dr. Boaz is also the author of several books, and
many research papers in the areas of forestry,
medicinal plants, sustainable land use, rural
development and forest tribal interface. He has also
presented the findings of his research at several
international conferences and seminars in Switzerland,
Hawaii, Germany, Indonesia, Nepal and India.
