SACEP Delegation Explores Enhanced Inter-Regional Environmental Cooperation with ASEAN

A delegation from the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), led by its Director General, Mr. Norbu Wangchuk, held a bilateral meeting with H.E. San Lwin, Deputy Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community, at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The meeting served as a pivotal step in fostering deeper inter-regional collaboration between South Asia and Southeast Asia on pressing environmental issues. Both parties engaged in substantive discussions on shared environmental challenges, with a particular focus on areas of mutual concern such as marine plastic pollution, climate change, air quality degradation, and transboundary environmental threats.

Mr. Wangchuk and H.E. San Lwin underscored the urgent need for strengthened Inter regional cooperation and knowledge exchange, emphasizing the role of joint initiatives in achieving sustainable development goals and enhancing environmental resilience across both regions. The leaders highlighted the value of building strategic partnerships and leveraging regional expertise to support national and regional action plans, in line with global environmental frameworks and commitments.

This engagement marks a significant milestone in advancing SACEP’s commitment to regional integration and multilateral cooperation, and lays the foundation for future collaboration between SACEP and ASEAN in promoting a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable environment for the peoples of South and Southeast Asia.
