Director General of SACEP Dr. Abas Basir accompanied by SACEP Senior Officer Mr. Rathnadeera had bilateral meeting with honorable Minister of Environment of Maldives Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan on 20, January 2020 at his office in Male, Maldives.
During this meeting, Dr. Basir briefed Minister on ongoing SACEP activities including Plastic free rivers and seas project and requested continued support of Government of Maldives in implementing this very important project. Dr. Basir thanked Government of Maldives for supporting SACEP in organizing the stakeholder consultation meeting on Plastic Free Rivers and Seas of South Asia Project which was held on 19th January 2020 in Male’, Maldives back to back with the Maldives national level stakeholder consultation on solid waste management policy. He added that Governing Council of SACEP at its 15th meeting held in Dhaka last year, adopted regional policies on waste management, marine litter, biodiversity and SPP, which require all member countries to adopt implementation measures at the national level.
Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan congratulated SACEP for its achievements and assured his full support of SACEP in conducting its programmes and plans particularly of plastic waste management project. He also mentioned about sea level rise that Maldives is facing due to climate change and highlighted the importance of regional and international cooperation in addressing this global challenge.
