Recycling of Land Based Marine Litter: Challenges and Opportunities in
South Asia Region

South Asia Co-operative environment Programme (SACEP) successfully concluded a parallel event themed “Recycling of Land Based Marine Litter: Challenges and Opportunities in South Asia Region” during the Eighth Regional 3R forum in Asia and the Pacific held between 09-12th April 2018 in Indore, India.
The event was chaired by His Excellency Shah Zaman Maiwandi, Director General, National Environment Protection Agency(NEPA), Afghanistan who is also the current chair of the SACEP governing council.
The objective of the parallel event was to broadly discuss the Challenges and Opportunities the SACEP/SASP member countries of South Asia are facing with regard to recycling of land based Marine Litter in a panel discussion. The panelists representing the maritime countries of South Asian Seas Programme shared their respective National Marine Litter action plan reports. The regional action plan report was presented by Dr.Sivaji Patra, Senior Programme Officer (Regional), SACEP (South Asia Seas Programme).
The panelists showcased the successful stories and case studies where the governments of South Asia have worked together in achieving the international objectives of 3R practices. The event discusses the strategies needed to manage marine litter in the South Asia Region including Formulation of management policies; International conventions,laws,regulations and treaties; implementation of direct development activities; research and surveys; implementation of enforcement programmes; monitoring and Evacuation; Education and awareness programme and market and economic instruments. The event was attended by representatives from the National Governments as well as International organizations such as UN, IGES.
